Milestone 0: Story

Discussion date: April 7. Please note that all submission material is due the morning before at 8am.

General Description

In this milestone, you should form groups and discuss preliminary project ideas.

Groups should have 4 members. In general, we would like to leave group formation up to you as much as possible. On the other hand, we might have to switch people around to balance overall group productivity and to deal with drop dates and such. Please let us know ASAP if you have trouble finding a group to join or if your group misses a member.

Once you have formed a group, please start discussing story ideas for a project. Please keep the story and style as simple as possible! Remember that it is better to do something simple but good, than something hard but bad. You project's brainstorming should take into account how cool your story idea is as well as how feasible it is given a very tight time frame. You are welcome to use time in Thursday's lecture to brainstorm with your friends about possible ideas and ask us about it. Please also realize that you will have to produce a storyboard for your projects in only two days after this is due (this will be the only time this happens). I would strongly suggest you to start working on this now!

Overall, we suggest to pick simple and short stories. Remember: less is better! In this course we aim for quality, not quantity! Your story should require 60-90 seconds to tell. A longer story will probably look worse than a shorter one. Also, please do not include more than 2 animated characters (you can have more but they should be copies). Also think about which environment you'll need and how complex they will be to create and what kind of look you are going for: realistic or cartoony. We suggest you pick simple environments and a non-realistic look since it will be hard for you to create realistic scenes in the given time. While discussing your story, be as precise as possible since you'll have only a few days to turn these ideas into a full fledged storyboard!

Submission Material

Send an email containing the following items to

  • Names of your group members.
  • Name of your group.
Pick carefully since you will be called with this name for the rest of the course :-).
  • Project title.
This will be the internal name of your piece. We'll later on decide about the real title.
  • Project description.
Your project description should contain your story idea and information that will help us evaluate if the project is feasible. Overall, the details we need are at least about 1-2 page of texts. But more is better since it will help you later. You are welcome to include pictures and drawings if it helps (they will be required for milestone 1 anyway). In particular, we would like to know about:
    • Story summary. Max of 60-90 seconds. Less is better!
    • Number and names (these can change) of your characters. Max 2.
    • Types of environments (outdoors, indoors).
    • Ideas about story look (realistic, catoony). We suggest you to avoid realistic styles.
    • A paragraph or two that suggests why you think you can do it in 8 weeks.
